Russia seems to be aggressively pushing for surburban prefab developments:

http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/10_27/b4185007612464.htm

Quote
After visiting a newly completed development of prefabricated houses on the outskirts of St. Petersburg in November, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said he hoped homeownership will inspire Russians "to have more babies."

Haha - that's one way to get people busy!  Wink

Didn't it used to be called "intended"?  Like intended communities.

The word "collaborative" is of course one of the latest buzzwords being circulated/hyped across the net. You can find collaborative sites to help a group of people jointly make a text document together, or to collaboratively draw a picture together, or to collaboratively compose a piece of music together, or to collaboratively produce an animation together:

http://typewith.me
http://dreamzone.com
http://www.doink.com
http://www.audioexpert.com
http://stroome.com/

There has been a popularization of "group buying" and now there is also the new mantra of "collaborative consumption" for efficient buying that poses least burden on the environment, etc:

http://www.secretpeace.com/2010/01/collaborative-consumption.html

There is also the idea of "collaborative construction":

http://www.wikinomics.com/blog/index.php/2009/09/18/collaborative-construction/
http://www.springerlink.com/content/q311j3v88004435n/
http://atlanticcollaborative.com/

But how far can collaboration and collaborative tools be extended?

Is it possible to build even entire communities from the ground up, based on collaborative networking and decision-making?

Could groups of baby-boomers for example pre-plan the creation of retirement communities for themselves in advance, including location, overall layout, types of amenities, facilities, etc?

This contest ends today folks, so if you are at all interested in an affordable green modern house, something that you would actually take to a contractor and get built, then support me and vote for my design entry.

Is society on the cusp of yet another generational transformation?
Are newer generations about to embark on news ways of living?

http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1971133_1971110_1971126,00.html

Could the prefab home become part of that, as new instant communities spring up?

An innovative new kind of toilet is getting attention, because it separates liquid and solid waste:

http://greenbiz.com/news/2010/03/12/no-mix-toilets-get-rave-reviews-europe

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/03/12/eco-friendly-toilet-separates-urine-feces/

This is interesting, because it's a very novel approach to waste treatment.
